The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning about counterfeit diabetes drugs that have been circulating since 2022, affecting various regions globally.
The organization highlighted specific findings in Britain, the U.S., and Brazil since October 2023.
These counterfeit drugs mimic the real medicine Ozempic, which contains semaglutide, an active ingredient approved for treating type 2 diabetes.
Despite looking identical to the authentic medication, the counterfeit version poses risks as it may not contain the correct amount of active ingredients, potentially leading to uncontrolled sugar levels in diabetics.
Additionally, these fake drugs could contain harmful substances that endanger health.
The WHO emphasized the importance of vigilance among healthcare professionals, regulatory authorities, and the public.
It advised against purchasing medicines online and stressed the necessity of obtaining medications through prescriptions from pharmacies.
Furthermore, users were urged to verify the correct display of dosage scales on insulin pens, ensure the accuracy of labels, and check for any spelling errors on the packaging.
